Cover Artist in 1953, and took home Hugos again in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964.In addition to his publishing successes, Emshwiller also painted gallery-quality canvases ­ in an abstract expressionist style ­ and shot experimental films. Before turning to filmmaking full-time in 1964, he created two still-remembered shorts Dance Chromatic (1959) and Thanatopsis (1962). Some critics consider his 1966 film Relativity one of the greatest short films ever made. In 1971, Emshwiller turned to the new medium of videotape, serving as Artist-in-Residence at New York’s Television Laboratory. From 1981 to 1986, he served as provost of the School of Film and Video at the California Institute of the Arts. Emshwiller died in 1990, at the age of 65.
